Mercy Health Center to celebrate Doctor's Day with a quiz

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Doctors' Day is being celebrated nationwide today (Wednesday, March 30) and Mercy Health Center is participating in its own way.

Staff will participate in a survey to see if they can figure out where hospital physicians were born. A map of the U.S. will be placed in the cafeteria so people can match the location to the doctor.

"It's a fun way that we can learn a little more about the physicians and their past," said Christina Rockhold, regional marketing & communication specialist, media relations-Mercy Central Communities.

The first Doctor's Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Ga.

Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians, according to Internet references. This first observance included mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. Red carnations are commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctor's Day, www.doctorsday.org says.

On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctor's Day was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctor's Day. Following overwhelming approval by the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, on Oct. 30, 1990, then-President George Bush signed S.J. RES. No. 366, which became Public Law 101-473, designating March 30 as "National Doctor's Day," the site said.
