To help get students interested in the performing arts, Fort Scott High School band members toured schools citywide Thursday.

At Eugene Ware Elementary School, all 480 students assembled in the school gym to hear some tunes, learn about band and get a demonstration of various instruments played. It's something the Tiger band, led by James Fox, does every year.

Dale Harris, a third-grader, said he liked the music, but doesn't know if he'll try to join the band when he gets older.

Fort Scott High School freshman Zach Denton and senior Chase Rooks both play alto saxophone.

"We go to each school promoting band and to (help kids realize) they can do other things. They can play sports" and still be part of band. "It's not a life-overtaking thing," Denton said.

Rooks said the youngsters at Eugene Ware were "pretty adorable."

"It's always nice to see younger kids get involved in music," he said, adding he remembers the yearly band tours when he was younger. "I had older siblings in band also."

Denton, the oldest child in his family, said he always thought joining band would be fun, so he did it.

The band also stopped at Winfield Scott Elementary, Fort Scott Middle School and St. Mary's Catholic School on Thursday.
