Cabin Fever Breakaway continues
This is the final installment of a two-part series.
As the ladies filed down the rows of tables and began filling their plates, you almost needed a Paul Bunyan size plate, because there was no way you could ever begin to sample all of the salad choices, and at the end of each table were the delectable sub sandwiches. We then entered the church dining room and before we knew it, everyone was seated and began to enjoy their meal.
The meal was served by the men of the church and quite a few young boys helped, too. The boys began making their way among the tables with trays of four different kinds of homemade soup. My memory becomes a little fuzzy on the choices, but I do remember they had a taco soup and a chicken noodle soup. The boys kept our coffee pots filled, doing anything and everything to be of assistance.
By the time we had finished the last bite of our dessert, we literally wobbled back into he sanctuary for the last two events of the day. They always give door prizes, which are all donated by various businesses and individuals.
Pottery pieces that have been donated by Dave Lyons for the past few years are always looked forward to with much anticipation. Dave took up pottery making several years ago and it has become a great hobby. One year he even taught a class on it. Anyway, he donated between 30 to 40 pieces. Every year I keep my fingers crossed hoping they will call my name before they are all given out. Well, this year I got one of the pieces, a lovely cream pitcher. Everyone was quite happy with their prizes.
And then it was time for our speaker, Sue Leonard, who is a singer, songwriter, recording artist, wife, mother of five and grandmother of 12. She is a former nightclub singer, but now sings for the Lord. Her story was stitched together with the plan of salvation, a couple of solos, stories, a "sing along" or two and a joke or two.
Here is one of the stories that she told. A little girl and her mother were playing together. The little girl said to her mother, "I am going to fix you a cup of tea." She went into the kitchen and a little while later returned and handed her mother a nice hot cup of tea, the mother began drinking the tea and said to her daughter, "This is really good, how did you know how to fix it?" and she said, "well, I heated it up in the microwave and then I strained the tea into the cup just like you do mommy, but I couldn't find the strainer so I used the fly swatter." The mother, very upset said how could you do that in quite a loud voice and the little girl said "don't worry mommy, I didn't use your new one I used the old fly swatter."
Another Cabin Fever has come to an end, but we all have very fond memories of a day where we were pampered and treated like a queen for a day.
