Jayhawks finish fourth at 2A State

MANHATTAN -- Jayhawk-Linn's girls finished fourth in the Kansas Class 2A State Girls' Basketball Tournament here Saturday afternoon after falling to top-seeded Oxford, 48-44.

The Jayhawks finish their season with a record of 14-12 but with the school's first-ever State Tournament victory. This was the third appearance for the girls; the boys have never qualified. Prescott's boys qualified three times between 1939 and 1959 and had a 3-4 record in their appearances, including a third-place finish in Class BB in 1959. Prescott is now a part of the Jayhawk-Linn district.

The score was tied 12-12 after one period. The second quarter proved to be the difference as Oxford (22-4) outscored the Jayhawks 14-9 to go into the locker room with a 26-21 lead.

The teams played evenly in the second half. Jayhawk-Linn outscored Oxford by 1 point.

Baylea White had her second double-double of the tournament, scoring 13 points and hauling down 12 rebounds. In the tournament, she scored 42 points, made 18 of 18 field-goal attempts and grabbed 29 rebounds.

Emma Hargrove added 10 points for the Jayhawks and brought down 9 rebounds. Kaitlin Norris led the Wildcats with 14 points, Sarah White had 12 and Shelbie Hutchins had 11.

Oxford shot 36 percent from the field, making 16 of 45 field-goal attempts, and was also 16-of-24 at the free-throw line. Jayhawk-Linn shot 28 percent from the floor on 14 of 51 and went 12 of 21 at the charity stripe.

Jayhawk-Linn outrebounded Oxford 40-32.

Moundridge, which defeated Jayhawk-Linn in Friday night's semifinals, defeated Brookville--Ell-Saline 48-34 in Saturday's championship game. Freshman MacKenzie Suderman scored 21 points for the Wildcats while Brooke Halloway added 12. Moundridge (21-5) outscored the Cardinals 34-18 over the middle two periods.

Mariah Jones led Ell-Saline (19-7) with 13 points.

This is the 11th State title for Moundridge, which last won State in 2004.

Top-seeded Berean Academy, from Elbing, defeated No. 7 Lyndon, 41-32, to win the boys' championship. Karlin Wiebe led Berean (25-1) with 14 points as the Warriors successfully defended their State title.

Lyndon finished the season at 18-8.
