Independence teams sweep Greyhounds

INDEPENDENCE -- Independence's teams swept Fort Scott Community College in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play here Saturday night.

Fort Scott's women (5-9 East, 8-18 overall) fell to the fifth-ranked Pirates, 70-48. Independence leads the East at 13-1, 25-1.

Pirate men (12-2, 20-6) took a 62-41 victory to remain in first place. Fort Scott remains ninth in the East at 2-12, 3-22, with both conference victories coming over last-place Labette.

Jolee Sharp led Fort Scott's women with a double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sharp made 11 of 14 free throws.

Ashlie Baker added 14 points for the Greyhounds, who made 24 of 35 free-throw shots but just 11 of 40 field-goal attempts.

Liene Priede led Independence with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor. Taylor Floyd scored 15 for the Pirates, who shot 48 percent from the field on 28 of 58.

Menas Stephens led Fort Scott men with 17 points but no one else score more than 6. The Greyhounds shot 36 percent from the field on 16 of 45 while Indy shot 46 percent on 25 of 55. The 'Hounds were charged with 32 turnovers.

Both Fort Scott teams had fewer than 20 points at the half. Pirate women led 29-17 while Indy men led 29-16.

Fort Scott's teams host Cowley -- Tiger women are second in the East while the men are fourth -- Wednesday night ar Arnold Arena. The women's game tips off at 5:30 with the men set to begin at 7:30.
