Sheldon sets 'Meet the Candidates Night'
SHELDON -- With the April 5 election approaching, voters will be invited to take part in "Meet the Candidates Night" from 6:30-7 p.m. March 10 at City Hall.
The Sheldon Board of Aldermen voted to stage the event a half hour before their next meeting, when mayoral candidates James Quist and Debbie Huggins will join Mayor Rob Sewell to meet citizens and answer questions.
Seeking new three-year terms, incumbent Aldermen Robert Moran and Josh Lamb will also participate along with board hopeful John Scifers, who attended the Thursday night meeting.
In other business, the panel reviewed an offer by Elliott Equipment of Omaha, Neb., to give $10,000 for a trade-in of the city's 1995 Peterbilt trash collection truck, replacing that 25-yard-carrying vehicle with one having a 20-yard capacity and costing $138,928.
The members said they do not need more than a 16-yard truck and will thereby continue reviewing options including a grant application through the Kaysinger Basin Regional Planning Commission at Clinton. "I wasn't too happy with the trade-in," Moran said.
Sheldon uses a landfill near Lamar.
Aldermen thanked Maintenance Supervisor Derald Stanley for his street-clearing efforts after the heavy snows of Jan. 31-Feb. 1 and last Tuesday and Wednesday.
Stanley said he had installed 26 three quarter-inch Neptune water meters bought for $44 each from Water Products Inc. of Owasso, Okla.
