Tiger boys' rally falls just short, 60-57
Friday night at Chanute, the homestanding Blue Comets had a 30-point quarter against Fort Scott. But it wasn't enough as the Tigers held on for a 62-57 victory.
Tuesday night at the "Tigerdome," Fort Scott's boys had a 30-point quarter against visiting Coffeyville. But it wasn't enough as the Golden Tornado held on for a 60-57 victory in Southeast Kansas League play.
The Tigers (1-2 SEK, 8-7 overall) trailed 40-27 going into the final stanza and had scored just 13 points in the second and third quarters combined.
After only managing to put up 8 field-goal attempts in the third quarter, Fort Scott connected on 12 of 25 attempts in the fourth. They got within 3 with six seconds remaining when Jaret Thorpe hit a triple from the left wing. Coffeyville threw the inbound pass away and Fort Scott had the ball in front it its own bench with 3.9 seconds left.
Gabe Quick threw the inbound pass to Matt Wright, who passed it back to Quick. But Coffeyville's James Newton got a hand on the pass and took the ball away to run out the clock.
"We obviously put ourselves in a big hole," Fort Scott head coach Jeff DeLaTorre said. "I think we kind of started the game on our heels. Coffeyville's a very good team. They're very talented, athletic, they're young. They presented a lot of problems with their quickness and athleticism."
The Tigers scored 8 of the game's first 11 points with 4 each from Matt Wright and Cameron Woodring. But then Quinton Hershey hit a couple of 3-point shots for the Nado (2-0, 10-4) to spark a 12-3 run that saw them go up 15-11 with just seconds to go in the first period.
Wright, however, launched a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer that swished through the hoop to bring the Tigers within one point.
As it turned out, the shot didn't take Coffeyville out of its game as the Nado scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to go up 25-14.
Wright, who performed well on the inside, broke the Nado run with back-to-back hoops and Quick hit a 3-point shot. But Coffeyville scored the last 4 of the half at the free-throw line to make it a 30-21 lead.
The Nado scored the first 5 of the second half and held Fort Scott to 6 points and one field goal in the third.
Devin Knight led Coffeyville with 14 points. Wright finished with 17 on 8-of-10 field-goal shooting for the Tigers while Woodring added 16.
Griffin Knopp, coming off the bench, led the Tigers with 10 rebounds.
