Three earn medals at Paola
PAOLA -- For the second straight weekend, Fort Scott High School saw three wrestlers earn medals, this time at the Paola Invitational here Saturday.
The Tigers finished seventh in the 14-team field. Derby was the team champion with 190 1/2 points followed by Pittsburg with 141 1/2 and Great Bend with 136.
Dane Cummings had the highest finish, taking second place at 189 pounds. He drew a first-round bye, then pinned Great Bend's Darion Blair in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinal, Cummings held a 13-6 lead over Pittsburg's Austin Winner. But Winner's actions late in the match caused it to be stopped, giving Cummings a win via disqualification.
"I was extremely proud of how Dane conducted himself in that match," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said. "He showed a depth of character that we want all our kids to have now and in the future."
Cummings went on to face Darrian Willis of Kansas City-Sumner, who is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, in the finals. Willis won by a pinfall.
Tyler Sharp had a tough 112-pound bracket but finished third and gaining his 20th victory of the season. He drew a first-round bye, then took a 3-0 decision over Basehor-Linwood's Michael Torrez, ranked No. 6 in 4A.
Great Bend's Chris Burley, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, dropped Sharp into consolation with a 7-0 decision. But Sharp pinned Derby's Jeffery Morrow in the consolation semifinals and defeated Torrez in another 3-0 decision in the third-place match.
Victor Hughes picked up his 25th win of the season as he finished third at 135. He began the day with a pin over Atchison's Dustin Gosa, then took a 10-0 major decision over Jack Mitchell of Shawnee Mission East.
Pittsburg's Aaron Seybold, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, sent Hughes into consolation with a 10-8 decision. IN consolation, Hughes pinned Willie Godfrey of Great Bend and took a 2-0 verdict over Mitchell in the third-place match.
"Vic wrestled tough in the semifinals against Seybold," Brown said. "Vic had been pinned in the last two meetings this year and was about 20 seconds from stealing an upset but was reversed and lost 10-8."
The Tigers will wrestle at home Thursday night as Independence and Labette County come to the FSHS gymnasium for a Southeast Kansas League triangular. Action is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
