No. 5 Pirates control 'Hound women
Fort Scott Community College's women held Independence within shouting distance in the first five minutes of play at Arnold Arena Wednesday night. But after that, the fifth-ranked Pirates took firm control and went on to a 71-51 victory in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.
Fort Scott was within 11-7 with 15 minutes remaining in the first half after Kerenza Singletary scored a basket off a teammate's miss. After that, Independence -- which saw 11 players score -- rolled.
The Pirates (5-0 East, 17-0 overall) held the 'Hounds (1-4, 4-13) to 7-of-30 field-goal shooting (23 percent) in the first half and built a 36-21 lead.
The Pirates also held FSCC scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half and increased the margin to 45-21.
Jolee Sharp had a second consecutive double-double for the Greyhounds with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Ashlie Baker added 14 points while Kendra Mattox led with 14.
