Arcadia sees 108 voters at the polls

A good crowd number, 24 in all, attended the First Sunday of November Chicken Dinner in Arcadia Christian Church including these young people; Bridgette and Alanis Sprague, Josie Bryant, Allyson and Karter Dugan, Courtney Allen, Bridget Schmitz and Chyenne Mellon. They were very active in getting the food on the table and also during clean-up time. All were happy to see Baby Katherine Semple with her parents back in Church. That evening they enjoyed a movie after their lesson time in the bungalow,

All are reminded to mark your calendar for Operation Santa Fundraiser to be Sunday Nov. 28 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Community Center. Call Edith Bridgewater if you need details about money donations, desserts, freewill offering. The funds will benefit Arcadia kids for Christmas Gifts. The Bridgewater family started this project several years ago and would like to see it continued for many more.

On Election Day in the early hours before daybreak, the firemen were called to a house that was consumed to the ground. Just over the South Railroad tracks in Arcadia, across the street West of the former Clyde and Margaret Holmberg house, the un-occupied house was destroyed. How the fire started is unknown.

The Liberal News of Liberal, Mo., pictured Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Garrett on their wedding day on May 29 in Golden City, Mo. The Bride is the daughter of Stanton and Barbie Gardner of Golden City. The Groom is the son of Matthew C. Garrett of rural Arcadia and the late Kelly Willey Garrett. He is the grandson of Bob and Naomi Garrett of Liberal formerly of Arcadia and the late Lila and Raymond Willey, Mulberry. We wish the couple many years of happiness.

The first voter in the Arcadia Community Center of Nov. 2 was Harry Tustin. The polls opened at 7 a.m. and last voter was Margaret Nelson Horn, rural Arcadia. Polls closed at 7 p.m. after 108 votes were cast. The board turned in three Provisional Ballots and 87 Advanced Ballots were from this area.

The board consisted of Patty Peterson, Linda Morris and Mary V. Shead. One person, Shirley Culbertson, voted using the electronic machine. All others used the pens.

Arcadians are sorry to hear of the death of former residents these past weeks. Ruth McNeil Zemlock, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 3 in Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg. She was born in Fulton, in 1922 to James and Julian McNeil. She, with family, lived in Arcadia, part of her grade school days. Her husband, Tony Zemlock Sr. preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 2008.

A well known lady, Phyllis Easter, died recently. Her husband, was the late Bob Easter, the Auctioneer. They lived rural Liberal, Mo. for many years on what local people called the Bob Easter Corner in Missouri just East of Oskaloosa.

The Calendar for the month of November in the Arcadia Community Activity Center is as follows: Nov. 13 Jakson Payne First Birthday Party, Nov. 19 Maybe a Sing along, Nov. 21 Buttons Family, Nov. 23 Cato Meeting, Nov. 25 Steve Morris, Nov. 27 Our Gang and Nov. 28 Christmas Benefit Noodle Feed for Santa.

Cindy and Ralph Shead visited her aunt in Arkansas whose husband died while the Sheads were in Santiago Chile. A week later they visited Cindy's dad, R.H,. Geurin in Tulsa, after he had back surgery. He is now in his own home with his grandson Josh caring for him. Saturday evening the Sheads visited his mother in Arcadia and had dinner in Fort Scott.
