Tigers fourth at AC
GARNETT -- Fort Scott High School's golf team finished in fourth place at the 18-hole Anderson County Invitational here Monday in their final regular-season tournament before next Monday's Regional at Chanute.
This tournament also served as the final tournament to determine All-SE-KAN area honors. The SE-KAN list was started before the Southeast Kansas League started sponsoring girls' golf before the 2009 season. It continues as many other smaller programs, such as Uniontown, Caney Valley and Fredonia among others, play in leagues that do not sponsor girls' golf. The SE-KAN team gives those golfers a chance to be recognized.
This was the fifth time in eight tournaments this season the Tigers have finished fourth. Chanute was the team winner with a four-woman score of 382. Caney Valley and Girard followed, both with 392. Caney was placed higher because it had the better fifth-golfer's score.
Fort Scott shot 433 to finish two strokes ahead of host Anderson County.
"Collectively, not our best outing of the season, but there were some definite bright spots," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said.
Kacie Brown continued her medalist streak as she has medaled in every tournament this season. She finished seventh this time with a 51 on the front nine and a 44 on the back for a total of 95.
"Kacie overcame a rocky first nine to shoot one of her best nine-hole scores of the season," Curran said.
Maggie Sloan of Pittsburg was the individual winner with a 40-40--80. Timbrelee McNair of Girard was second at 42-39--81. SEK champion Taylor Gard of Chanute was third at 40-42--82.
Devan Lloyd shot 59-48--107 for the Tigers while Riley Wunderly finished at 57-58--115 and Ashleigh Marquardt rounded out the team scoring at 59-57--116.
Karlee Stark shot 62-62--124 for the Tigers while Hayley Kruse came in at 60-73--133.
Brown finished sixth in SE-KAN standings and as one of the top 10, earned All-SE-KAN honors. McNair, a freshman, had the best score, 324, in tournaments that counted toward the honor. Brown's score was 369.
Lloyd finished 11th in SE-KAN and Wunderly tied for 14th. They received Honorable Mention All-SE-KAN.
The Tigers will be at the Chanute Class 4A Regional Tournament Monday, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Curran says the girls plan to play the course there this weekend to get a feel for it. They played in a tournament there on Sept. 13.
"I think we stand as good as chance as anyone to place in the top three teams at Regionals and qualify for State," Curran said.
