KJCCC teams hold spots 2, 3, 4 in poll

Friday, October 1, 2010

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College maintained its No. 1 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association /jcfootball.com poll released Tuesday while three Jayhawk Conference teams follow in spots 2, 3 and 4.

MGCCC defeated Southwest Mississippi 51-21 last Thursday night and were scheduled to face Pearl River last night. The Mississippi conference plays the majority of its games on Thursdays.

Following 4-0 MGCCC, which received 5 first-place votes, is Butler (5-0), which remains in second place for the second week in a row following a 63-3 blasting of Dodge City, last in the Jayhawk Conference. The Grizzlies generated 337 yards rushing and 528 yards in total offense. They travel to Garden City Saturday.

Hutchinson (4-0), which drew a bye last week, moved up one spot to No. 3 after former No. 3 Ellsworth (Iowa) was beaten by then-No. 11 Grand Rapids (Mich.) by three touchdowns in a Midwestern Football Conference game last weekend. The Blue Dragons host Fort Scott (1-4) Saturday. Hutchinson's No. 3 ranking is its highest since 1970.

Coffeyville (4-0), which is coming off a 59-14 victory over Fort Scott, moved up one position to No. 4. The Red Ravens, who host Air Force Prep this week, are followed by No. 5 Iowa Central, which is just in its second season of football. ICC defeated Harper 45-7 last week and will host the College of DuPage Saturday.

Blinn (3-1) stands at No. 6 after having last week off. No. 7 Navarro (3-1) defeated Kilgore, 45-10, last week to set up a meeting with Blinn Saturday at Navarro in a key Southwest Junior College Football Conference game. Both teams are up one place from last week.

Navarro is tied for seventh with Glendale (Ariz.), which defeated Pima last week, 34-21. Glendale (4-0), which has a national-best seven-game winning streak, travels to Phoenix this Saturday. Northwest Mississippi (4-0) is No. 9 after beating Coahoma last week. NWMCC played Northeast Mississippi Thursday.

Grand Rapids (4-1) moves into the top 10 with its victory over Ellsworth and travels to Iowa Central Saturday.

The second ten begins with former No. 1 Arizona Western, which fell from that position when it was upset by Glendale two weeks ago. Lackawanna (Pa.) is No. 12 followed by Ellsworth, Copiah-Lincoln (Miss.), Central Lakes (Minn.), Georgia Military, Snow, Cisco, Nassau (N.Y.), with ASA of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Rochester (Minn.) tied for 20th.

The only other teams receiving votes are both from Mississippi, Pearl River and Hinds.

Twelve teams are still unbeaten, including Lackawanna, Copiah-Lincoln, Central Lakes, Cisco and Nassau.
