Tigers third in home junior varsity tourney
Fort Scott High's junior varsity tennis team finished third in its home tournament Monday with Independence claiming first place and Pittsburg finishing second.
Fort Scott coach Lynn Barr had a regular four-entry team, which was dubbed Fort Scott Red, and two extras for Fort Scott White. Chanute and Labette County also brought extra players, which allowed each division to have six entries.
The Red's No. 1 doubles team, Ashlyn Baugher and Bailee Hall, finished in first place with a 4-0 record for the day. They beat Scarlet Manley/Tayita Abudu of Coffeyville 6-1, Sara Hernandez/Haley Ackridge of Chanute 6-2 and Krista Hightower/Hannah Messer of Fort Scott White 6-2. In the finals, they defeated Manley and Abudu again 6-5 (9-7).
Aubin Duff and Jasmine Davis went undefeated for Fort Scott White in No. 2 doubles. They beat Jessica Hutto/Karleigh Wells of Labette County 6-5 (7-4), Samantha Fletcher/Jessica Nickelson of Parsons, 6-3 and Regan Olson/Ashley Caylor of Chanute 6-1. In the finals, they beat Fletcher and Nickelson a second time, 6-4.
Brittany Burns and Kandice Rost were 3-1 for Red in No. 2 doubles. They won by default over Coffeyville, which was open, then defeated Regan Olson/Ashley Caylor of Chanute 6-2 then lost to Fletcher/Nickelson 6-4. In the third-place match, they beat Olson/Caylor 6-3.
Rounding out doubles play was the team of Hightower and Messer, who were 1-3. They picked up a victory over Bethany Baker/Katie Harrison of LCHS 6-2 but lost to Brea Harris and Kelsey Jump of Parsons twice, 6-3 the first time and 6-5 (7-2) in the third-place match.
Sammi Carr was 1-3 in No. 1 singles to finish fourth. She defeated Rachel Jones of Coffeyville 6-3, then suffered consecutive 6-1 losses to Brianna Brooks of Chanute, Jennifer Nickelson of Parsons, then to Brooks again.
Becky Lemke was 0-3 in No. 2 singles. She lost to Tiasa Huls of Coffeyville 6-1, Haley Markham of Chanute 6-2, and Sami Brown of Labette County 6-0.
The next scheduled outing for the Fort Scott JV is Monday at Parsons. Two other JV events remain on the schedule.
