Starlite members genealogy lesson

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Twelve Starlite members and three guests met Aug. 19 at the Genealogical Library for the unit's monthly meeting. President Joan Isaac called the meeting to order with members reciting the Club Collect and the Flag Salute. The secretary, Betty Johnson, read the minutes of the June meeting. The minutes were approved. The unit did not meet in July because members were working at the Bourbon County Fair which was held July 19 through the 23.

Correspondence was read. Thank you notes were received from The Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center for cookies and from Hannah Fry for her 4-H award in sewing. A total of 120 volunteer hours were recorded. Pennies for Friendship were collected. It was moved by Wilma Endy that the unit donate $15 to the Pennies project. Betty Johnson seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Councilwoman Marge Stringer reported that cookies are needed at the high school on Oct. 19 for the blood drive. Cookies can be delivered on Monday, Oct. 18 to the Red Cross Office, located next to the Church of God on north Broadway or the high school during the morning of Oct. 19. Marge also announced the Fall Follies will be held at 5:15 in the evening on Nov. 18. The meeting will be held at the First Southern Baptist Church. The public is encouraged to attend.

The Spring Social will be held on April 5.

The Nominating Committee for 2011 officers will be Wilma Endy, Betty Johnson, and Marge Stringer. Officers will be elected at the October meeting. Dues for 2011 are to be paid to Clarice Russell by Oct. 1. They may be brought to the September meeting that is to be held in the Moran Senior Center at 10:30 a.m.

A lesson on genealogy was presented by Sandy Rylander and Sandra Haimerl. They stressed the following important points:

1. Look up records for the immediate family first and work backwards to ancestors.

2. Don't stray.

3. Document, document, document.

4. Get organized or you'll have papers all over the house.

5. Write to relatives and use the Internet.

6. Keep an open mind as spelling of names change through the years

The presenters kept our interest by tracing one of the member's ancestors through the years.
