Herman Werholtz, 93, formerly of Girard, died at 7:10 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, in the Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence, Kan.

He was born Jan. 30, 1917 in Skidmore, Kan., the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Volker) Werholtz.

In 1919, he moved with his family to Camp 50, west of Arma, Kan., and in 1923, the family moved to Hiattville, Kan., where he grew up and attended schools.

On April 7, 1937, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and served in Farlington, Kan.; Remer, Minn.; Burlington, Kan; Oak Harbor, Wash.; Glazier Park, and Dillon, Mont.; before being discharged in 1939.

He married Alice M. Zimmerman on Feb. 18, 1943 in Girard. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1986. He married Bertha Leonard Bailey on Dec. 20, 1989 in Girard. She preceded him in death on Feb. 27, 2003.

He worked for Texaco Pipe Line for 36 years in Kansas, Illinois, and Oklahoma. The last 22 years as a receiving and delivery supervisor. He managed the Texaco Products Sales Terminal at Ponca City, Okla., before retiring to Girard on Sept. 1, 1978.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hiattville.

Survivors include a brother, Rudolph Werholtz of Lawrence; step-son Lonnie Bailey of Topeka, Kan.; step-granddaughter Tracy Brown of Ibera, Mo.; step-grandson Brian Bailey of Des Moines, Iowa; step-great-granddaughter Faith Bailey of Des Moines; step-great-grandsons Trenton and Cole Brown of Ibera and Eli Bailey of Des Moines; nephew Roger Werholtz of Lawrence.

He was preceded in death by four half-brothers and four half-sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Rev. Steve Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.

The family received friends from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m., Monday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Hiattville or the donor's choice and these may be left at the funeral home at 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
