Families enjoy birthday, anniversary celebrations

On Sunday, Aug. 8, Howard and Louise Holland hosted a dinner party at Gebhardt's at noon in celebration of his mother's 85th birthday. She, Ruth Holland, enjoyed the 15 who were present including relatives and close friends. After dinner, they went to the Holland home, rural Liberal, Mo., where pictures were taken after Ruth received a lei and a tiara and blew out the candles on a special birthday cake. Granddaughters helped serve ice cream and cake to the guests and all sang the birthday song. Gifts were opened and showed to the guests for the day including Don, Tim and Norma Holland; Phil, Tina, Shelby, Shanda and Kelly VanKirk; Iva Mullins; John and Judy Rawlings and Mary Virginia Shead.

John and Vera Parrish, Pittsburg, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 30, 2010, with a family party at the Lodge Steakhouse in St. Paul, Kan. Attending the party were their three children, Walter and Donnetta Parrish, Hueston, Texas; Wayne and Christie Parrish, Arcadia; and Janet and Mark Van Leeuwen, St. Paul, Kan.; and granddaughters Jenny and Ryan Dugan with Allyson and Karter and Tara VanLeeuwen. After dinner the family went to the Van Leeuwen home where a special anniversary cake, made by Christie and Jenny, was served.

The youth group who meets once a month in Christian Church Bungalow made a special blanket for their friend Mae Watt who has been ill and visited with her that afternoon. Those in the group included Cheyenne Mellon, Stephanie Lickliter, Josie Bryant, Taylor Trammell, Simon Walrod. The adults who sponsored this project were Brandy Mellon, Patty Peterson, Willa and Charles Cable.

Lou and Betty Dehn celebrated their 13th Wedding Anniversary on Aug. 2, 2010. It also happened to be the birthday of their daughter-in-law, Christa Zeller from North Missouri.

Walter Foulk received word that his sister, Wanda Foulk Tullis, 88, of Independence, Mo. died on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010. She was born and raised in Arcadia and attended Arcadia Schools. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Foulk.

Nell Dikeman reported in Fort Scott Tribune, 100 years ago, 1919, Arcadia held its Arcadia picnic. The same year, Garland held a two-day picnic on Aug. 24-25. Among other activities, the baby contest was judged by three old bachelors.

On Aug. 3, soon after the polls opened in Arcadia, Greg Sisney, City employee, was the first to vote. Kathy Williams was second and was on her way to work. The polls closed that evening just after John and Sara Imhof with their three children, rural Arcadia, were No. 46 and 47. Linda Morris, City Clerk served as General Manager, Patty Paterson was Supervisor with Mary V. Shead as Clerk for the Arcadia Precinct voting held in the Community building. No one used the voting machine this election in Arcadia. However, most voters learned how to put the voted ballot into the counting machine.

While the City Clerk was busy at the polls, the City helpers moved her office from the City Hall to the Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens Building on Arcadia Street. This was due to a falling ceiling in the office of the former Bank Building known now as City Hall.

There will be a Fall Festival in Arcadia on Sept. 11. A committee meeting was held in Christian Church Parsonage on Aug. 2 with the following people who showed interest in this project. They were Patty Peterson, Don Talent, Charles and Willa Cable, Sam Haskew, Ede and Steve Lickliter, Bonnie and Loren Hines, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Beardon and Lilly Coonrod and perhaps others.

Lou and Betty Dehn and Mary V. Shead visited Mae Watt on Thursday. Her out of town visitors that weekend were Delton Jr and Bill Watt from the Kansas City area.

Sunday evening, a good crowd, many old time friends to Galen and Jodie Dunn, attended the services in Open Door Mission on Sunday evening, Aug. 8. She sat the piano for the gospel singing and then spoke briefly. Galen told of their work and future plans for their school and church in the Philippines. A supper was served following the meeting.
