No Saturday medals for Tiger thinclads

WICHITA -- In Fort Scott's only event at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships here Saturday, Fort Scott High School's Mallory Shelton cleared 5 feet even in Class 4A high jump, missing out on a medal when tie-breakers were used. Seventh-place medals went to Morgan Bell of Colby and Morgan Boore of Girard as each needed fewer attempts to clear the same height. Shelton was placed 10th officially.

Colleen O'Brien of Louisburg was the winner at 5' 6".

Griffin Knopp won Class 4A high jump and finished seventh in triple jump Friday while Colt Bartlett was 14th in shot put. Their events were covered in Saturday's edition of the Weekend Herald-Tribune.

The top seven finishers in each event earned medals.

NOTES -- Two other athletes from Southeast Kansas League schools won five State titles among them over the weekend.

Pittsburg's Keenan Soles picked up three golds in Class 5A, all in very close finishes. He won Class 5A triple jump on Friday with a mark of 46' 6 1/4", beating out Brad Pruter of Hays by 1/4 of an inch. He also took the 100-meter title in 10.96 seconds, just 1/10th of a second faster than Rashawn Baker of Topeka-Highland Park. He beat Baker again in the 200 finals by just 0.02 seconds after finishing in 22.34.

Ethan Fulton of Iola won Class 4A long jump with a mark of 22' 4 1/2", Like Soles, Fulton was a winner by jut 1/4 of an inch. Skylar Hawkins of Paola was second. He also took the 110-meter hurdles in 14.95, winning by a comfortable margin in comparison to the other events mentioned. Sean Covalcine of Haven was second in 15.27....
