Arcadians enjoy historical brickyard while hunting

Guests this week in the home of Mark and Haley Shead in Fort Scott were his cousins, Jamie and Ryan Luttrell and two children. They came from their ranch home in Nebraska to attend the graduation of his nephew in Spring Hill.
Recent deaths among members of Arcadia High School Alumni members are Felix Shular, from the Class of l935. Felix is the last of 16 members. He was buried in the Garden of Memories, Pittsburg on May 17, 2010.
Raymond Grace, from the Arcadia High Shool Class of 1936, was the youngest of that class, which had 34 graduates. He died May 19, 2010 in Carthage, Mo. Records show seven of that class are still living.
The Arcadia High School Alumni gathering will be held at Lamplighter Inn, Pittsburg, on Saturday, May 29.
Tom and Bill Watt spent some days recently visiting their brother, Delton Watt Jr and Joseph in Fayette, Mo., where they played in a golf tournament with Christian friends. A barbeque was held to celebrate Tom's 60th birthday, with eight neighbors as guests. A special ice cream cake was enjoyed. Sunday, the Watt brothers attended church before returning to their homes in the Kansas City area.
Sixty years ago, when the Arcadia High School Class of 1950 graduated, Melvin Nichols was Valdictorian. A few years ago, I visited him in the book store he owned in Bartlesville, Okla. Sherry Garrison was Salutatorian the same year. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Garrison. Nichols' parents were pastors of the Arcadia Assembly of God Church at graduation time. Another member of that same class is Hilda Page of Nevada. She is the Secretary-Teasurer of AHS Alumni Association. There were eight other members.
Friends are sorry to learn of the death of a former resident of Arcadia. Peggy Clarkson, 80, died in her home at Calvary Crossing in Fort Scott on Wednesday, May 19. Her husband was the late Blackie Clarkson. She is survived by a son, Richie Clarkson, and wife, Annie, one brother, Lawrence Brown of Fort Scott, and many grandchildren.
Belle Gazaway Teague, for many years lived and raised her son, Robert and daughter, Mavis Murrow, in Arcadia. Belle was a member of Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens and quillted with the Christian Church Ladies Aid. She died May 12, 2010 in Yates Center Nursing home in Kansas. Grave site services were Sunday, May 16 in Sheffiel Cemetery. We would like to extend condolences to the family.
Liepman Clothing House pictured in the Fort Scott Tribune on Wednesday, May 10, 2010 brought back memories of old time history of Arcadia. One of the Liepman men married Elva Sheffield from Arcadia. They had a daughter, Lujean and son, Jimmie Liepman, who spent many vacations in Arcadia with their Grandmother Eliza Sheffield. The Sheffields were distant relatives to the late Bessie Peterson.
Chariots of Fire Graduation pictures were sent to Arcadia by Jody and Galen Dunn. There were l4 students shown with their certificates from the Training Institute in the Philippine Islands. The Dunns were able to attend the special occasion. This is the second annual graduation in the Rehab Center of three jail ministries in the Philippines.
Shirley Applegarth was overnight guest of her daughter, Vickie and Larry Shead on Monday. Tuesday she had breakfast with Mary V. Shead before leaving for her home in Tulsa.
While Gary Peterson and friends were hunting wild turkeys, they discovered something old but new to them, near the southwest railroad tracks in Arcadia. It is the remains of a brickyard with a very tall smokestack made of bricks from way back before 1900. They took pictures and enjoyed their discovery but didn't get the turkey.
Willa and Charles Cable with Patty Peterson took Cheyenne Mellon and Josie Bryant and two friends to the skating rink in PIttsburg one evening last week. On Monday, June 7, the two ladies will start a children's program, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a cooking class, crafts, lunch and a Bible lesson. Friends of the members are invited to attend.
