Independence sweeps Greyhounds

INDEPENDENCE -- Fort Scott Community College's basketball teams suffered a sweep at the hands of Independence here Wednesday night in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play. Indy's women took a 90-74 victory while Pirate men took a 67-49 verdict to hand the Greyhounds their 18th consecutive loss.

The Greyhounds (3-9 East, 11-13 overall) led 30-23 with about six minutes remaining in the first half. But Independence went on a 14-1 run to end the first half with a 37-31 lead.

The Pirates (8-5, 17-7) also had an 18-0 run in the second half which saw them build a 23-point lead.

Shadara Hampton led the Greyhounds with 25 points, a career high she has reached for the third time. Her previous 25-point games were in the home-and-home series with Neosho County -- at Arnold Arena on Dec. 2 and at Chanute on Feb. 1.

Valencia Kelly added 22 points for the 'Hounds as she made 8 of 16 shots from the field. Brittany Demery, who was named Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division Player of the Week for her performance in three games last week, chipped in with 11 points.

Tori Halversen led Independence with 23 points on 11-of-18 field-goal shooting. Sadie Webb followed with 21 points and Danielle Bird added 11.

The Pirates shot 54 percent from the field, making 34 of 63 field-goal attempts while Fort Scott shot 40 percent on 25 of 62. Indy also outrebounded the 'Hounds, 40-32.

The Greyhounds (0-13, 3-22) trailed only 28-22 at the half. Ramell Taylor, KJCCC-East Player of the Week two weeks ago, scored 30 points, one shy of his career high, as he made 13 of 22 shots from the field.

Tokie Aromona led Independence (8-5, 15-10) with 20 points. Andrew Easley added 15 and Jaurice Magg-Downing had 11.

Indy shot 41 percent from the field on 24 of 58. Fort Scott was 18 of 42 for 43 percent.

Taylor hauled down 11 rebounds and McCoy 10 for Fort Scott. Independence held a slight advantage on the boards, 33-32.

Both Fort Scott teams will be at home Saturday afternoon, hosting Johnson County. Women tip off at 2 p.m. with the men to follow at 4.

NOTES -- Demery earned her honors for having double-doubles in each game last week. She had 10 points and 14 rebounds in the Monday victory over Neosho County, 13 points and 12 boards in Wednesday's game versus Coffeyville, and 22 points and 11 caroms in Saturday's contest against Allen County....

In another Wednesday women's game, Kansas City Kansas led Coffeyville 40-22 at halftime only to lose to the Red Ravens, 61-55. KCK's men stunned East-leading Coffeyville, 69-62....
