Weather cancels church in Arcadia for first time in years

Correction: In last week's Arcadia news, it was Tom R. Watt CEO Retail Service, who attended a business meeting in San Fransisco, not his brother Bill R. Watt as stated.
Maida Rouse Kirk, 80, died in her Pittsburg home Monday, Jan. 25, 2009. She was a graduate of Mindenmines High School and Pittsburg State University. In 1947 she married Homer Kirk. He proceeded her in death April 24, 1986. Her burial will be beside him in Fort Scott National Cemetery. Maida was well known as a music teacher of many instruments including students in Arcadia. She was a long time public school teacher also.
Due to poor health, Paul Starne, Mayor of Arcadia, officially resigned his position during the January Council Meeting. Following, City Council member Todd Trammell took the Mayor's Oath of office that evening. The next City Council meeting will be Feb. 9.
The Open Door Church will have its Valentine's Day Dinner on Sunday, Feb. 14 in Arcadia Community Center following morning church service.
Jack and Mary Lee Payne spent the weekend of Jan. 15 in Excelsior Springs, Mo., in th home of daughter Kelly and Steve Base. On Saturday they celebrated great-granddaughter Madison Peppers fourth birthday at Chuck E Cheese and, later that evening, celebrated Jack's birthday in the rural home of daughter Cindy and Ron Morton. Those present were: granddaughter Kimberlee and Antauan Peppers and son Isaiah Peppers, grandson Seth Morton and granddaughter Nikki and James O'Dell and Lainey of O'Fallon, Ill. Joining early in the day were daughter Amy and David Carpenter with sons Drew and Lane of Bolivar, Mo. At the same gathering the group also celebrated the birthday for grandson Ben Base even though he and his wife Faith were on vacation in Mexico at that time. Seth Morton left for college the following Monday where he is a freshman in St. Joseph, Mo.
On KOAM TV among the many other Four-State Heroes given honor were two former Arcadia fellows, Wiley Teague, deceased, and Max Davidson who now lives near Liberal, Mo.
Class No. 10 met in Christian Church Bungalow on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 20 with just five happy ladies present. Patty Peterson opened the meeting with reading from Streams in the Dessert. Devotions were taken from Philipines 4:11. Both Flag pledges were given by all. Judy Rawlings as hostess chose roll call to tell a special thought about the month of January. Mary V. Shead read an article of Bible characters praying when confronted by different animals. Secretary and treasurer's reports were read and approved. Thank you notes were read from Marsha Harris and Carole Morris Davis. The Class 10 Funeral committee served dinners for both families recently. Marsha gave an offering to the fund. All are asked to save Best Choice UPC's for the JOY SS Class. It is their fund making project all year long.
President dismissed with the Lord's prayer and Irish Blessing. Judy Rawlings assisted by Patty and Betty Dehn with serving ice cream and cake with mixed nuts and candies and Truffles to all including Carole Garrison. Special announcement was made concerning a forthcoming Ladies Retreat for March 27, the last Saturday of the month. Betty Dehn and Patty Peterson are the coordinators.
Due to the absence of Pastor David Peterson who was attending a seminar in Colorado and the guest speaker and family Jace and Jesse Pavlik snow bound in Oklahoma the Arcadia Christian Church was canceled the last Sunday in January. This has not been done for many years due to bad weather and older members being wise about traveling on snow-covered roads.
