Wreaths Across America at National Cemetery Saturday

Friday, December 11, 2009

Fort Scott National Cemetery will host Wreaths Across America, a holiday wreath-laying ceremony, at 11 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery, 900 E. National Ave.

The ceremony will take place to honor and remember the nation's veterans during the holiday season. Cemetery personnel, Veterans Service Organizations and citizens are coordinating the event to honor veterans of each branch of the military, the Merchant Marines, as well as Prisoners of War and those still Missing in Action.

Attending the event will be Richard Wheeler and John Speer, staff members at the cemetery, along with representatives from the military services, veterans and their families, and anyone who wishes to pay respect to the nation's heroes that are buried in the national cemetery, according to a statement from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Mained-based Worcester Wreath Company, through its Wreaths Across America campaign, began donating holiday wreaths in tribute to veterans laid to rest at the VA's 130 national cemeteries and state Veterans cemeteries in 2006. For each of the past 18 years, the company has donated wreaths for gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery. The Civil Air Patrol is once again coordinating wreath ceremonies around the country, the VA statement said.
