One dead, several injured in accidents

Emergency personnel had a busy night Monday as two significant accidents left one man dead and several injured.

Emergency crews responded to a fatal accident shortly before 6 p.m. Monday on Kansas Highway 7 near the Linn County line.

Billy Joe Miller, 33, of Pleasanton, died after being involved in a head-on collission on K-7 about 1.5 miles north of Kansas Highway 31.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Miller was driving a 1992 Ford F-150 southbound on K-7 when he crossed over the center line stiking an oncoming 1994 Ford F-150 Super Crew driven by Jason Casner, 35, of Fort Scott.

Casner and 8-year-old Jeremiah Casner were transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center via AMR Ambulance Service for treatment of injuries. Isiah Casner, 5, was transported to Mercy Children's Hospital via Mercy EMS.

None of the people involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts.

Later Monday night emergency personnel responded to a second accident about 11:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 69 about six miles south of the U.S. Hwy 69 and K-7 junction.

Jesse Stufflebeam, 22, of Fort Scott was traveling northbound on U.S. Hwy 69 in a 1996 Ford F-350 Supercab when he crossed the center line striking Reuben Olinde, 34, of Grand Junction, Colo., driving a 2007 Volvo Semi pulling two trailers heading southbound. After striking the semi, Stufflebeam continuted into the ditch strking a tree.

A third vehicle, a 2002 Toyota Corrolla driven by Jason Harris, 39, of Pittsburg, was southbound on U.S. Hwy 69 and struck a tire from the semi lying in the road.

Stufflebeam, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident. Both Olinde and Harris were wearing seatbelts and are listed as possibly sustaining injuries, according to the KHP.
