Dennis Gilbert West, 70, of Caballo, New Mexico, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 in Chanute, Kan.

Dennis was born on Dec. 7, 1938 in Bronson, Kan., the son of Gayle "Buck" Dusky West and Mary Jewel (Anderson) West.

He attended schools in Bronson, Kan., and graduated from El Paso High School, El Paso, Texas.

He served his country in the United States Army from 1961 through 1963.

He was united in marriage to Emma Jean Scully on Oct. 10, 1996 in Miami, Okla. She survives.

Dennis worked as an oilfield worker.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Bronson, and the Masonic Lodge in El Paso, Texas.

He enjoyed boating at Tablerock Lake; 4-wheeling and cruising in his 1971 Pontiac Convertible.

Along with his wife, Dennis is survived by three daughters, Linda Leake and her husband Steve of Iola, Mary Daniels and her husband Brett of Savonburg, Kan., and Cheryl Olson of Chanute; a son, Michael Alexander and his wife Angie of Lenexa, Kan.; grandchildren, Jason Leake of Iola, Lavon Leake of Chanute, Michelle and Brian Waggoner of Topeka, J.D. Ballard of Chanute, Sydney Hale of Savonburg, Abi Daniels of Savonburg and Brody Daniels of Savonburg; great-grandchildren, Kyren and Keaton Waggoner, both of Topeka; and a sister, Helen Fiekert and her husband Tom of Paola, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Connie West and Corliss Rowe.

Cremation has taken place.

Graveside inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at the Bronson Cemetery .

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at 1 p.m. at 802 S. Ashby, Chanute, Kansas.

Memorials in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Multiple Sclerosis Society and may be left with the funeral home.
