'Hound men pick up first victory

HUTCHINSON -- Fort Scott Community College's men picked up their first victory of the season as they concluded a four-games-in-four-days stretch with a 67-54 win over the Sterling College junior varsity Saturday night at the Hutchinson Quarterback Classic.

The Greyhounds (1-3) slowly pulled out to a 17-12 lead after 8 1/2 minutes. But Sterling managed to rally to tie the game three times and even enjoy a brief 20-19 lead with 7:49 left in the half.

Fort Scott's biggest lead in the first half was the halftime margin of 34-27. Sterling scored the first six points of the second half before the 'Hounds began to pull away.

Fort Scott's lead was 55-35 with 8:38 remaining in the contest. Sterling fought back but never got closer than 13 points.

Nathniel Ward led Fort Scott with 20 points as he made 8 of 12 shots from the field. Robert Hatcher followed with 13 and Ramell Taylor added 12.

Ward also had 10 rebounds for the Greyhounds and Hatcher dished out 10 assists.

Fort Scott will play in a four-team classic at Allen County this weekend. Friday's game will be against State Fair (Mo.) while Saturday's opponent will be Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Both games tip off at 4 p.m.

The 'Hounds don't play at home again until entertaining Neosho County in a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division game on Dec. 2. This is one of two conference games FSCC will play in December due to the move of the Jayhawk Conference Shootout to the second week of January.
