Peronalized plate holders must reorder in 2010; applications begin Nov. 9
The Kansas Department of Revenue has announced that the design for Kansas personalized license plates will change in 2010 and those who currently have them must reorder if they wish to keep their current choice.
The new plate can only be picked up during the vehicle owners' renewal month in 2010, according to a press release issued last week. KDOR has mailed out over 55,000 letters to individuals asking them them if they wish to keep their current plate combination. If so, individuals should order their plates when the letters are received. KDOR division of vehicles will begin accepting reorders Monday.
A new state statute now requires every plate combination to be unique. There can no longer be one of each combination in each county. Because of this change, KDOR has also sent out 31,600 letters to individuals who will not be able to keep their current combination. Those who were not the first owner of their current combination must choose a new combintation if they wish to reorder a personalized plate.
KDOR is also in the process of putting a feature on its Web site that will immediately tell individuals if a personalized plate combination is available or not.
In the past, owners received two plates to put on their vehicle. As a cost-cutting measure, KDOR will only issue one personallized plate. Kansas state law requires only one plate per vehicle.
