Uniontown clinches playoff berth
UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Uniontown clinched a spot in the Kansas Class 2-1A playoffs Friday night with a 14-0 victory over winless Northeast-Arma.
The Eagles improved to 2-0 in the district and 4-4 overall. They will face Pittsburg Colgan, 2-0, 7-1, at Pittsburg Thursday night in a game that decides which wins the district title and hosts its first playoff game. The loser of that contest will have to go on the road in the first round.
Uniontown held Northeast to 77 yards of total offense. The Vikings (0-2, 0-8) had the exact same amount of penalty yards.
"The kids did a terrific job defensively," Uniontown head coach Chad Stroud said. "Coach (Aaron) Law put a great game plan together and our kids executed very well. With the exception of two plays, I felt we tackled much better tonight. To limit a team to 23 plays and 77 yards is quite an accomplishment."
Uniontown rushed for 262 yards on 60 carries and had 281 yards in total. Jordan Woods carried the ball 29 times for 133 yards.
The Eagles' first score came on an 8-yard run by Ty Clayton in the second quarter. The conversion was unsuccessful. Zach Travis scored on a 19-yard run in the third quarter, then threw the 2-point conversion pass to Ben Dixon.
"Offensively, I felt we controlled the ball very well for the most part and wore them down," Stroud said. "We took the second-half kickoff and chewed eight minutes off the clock on our scoring drive. When our drives did stall out, we were able to continue to win the field-position game."
Travis carried 13 times for 63 yards for Uniontown while Clayton ran 13 times for 58 yards.
On defense. Clayton and DuShaun Robinson each had 6 tackles and Dixon had an interception.
