'Hounds break into JCGridiron top 5

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Fort Scott Community College's football team remained No. 3 in the NJCAA/ jcfootball. com poll released Tuesday. But it also attained its first top-5 ranking in the JCGridiron.com "Dirty 30" Poll.

The JCGridiron.com poll consists of all Junior College football teams in the United States, whereas the NJCAA/JCfootball.com poll consists of only members in the National Junior College Athletic Association. California, which has about 75 football teams, administers its athletic programs separately from the NJCAA.

Two California colleges top the rankings, El Camino City College and City College of San Francisco. Three NJCAA schools round out the top five, Blinn, Navarro, and Fort Scott. Butler is ranked No. 7.

Since the Dirty 30 Poll came into existence in 2005, this is the highest Fort Scott has been ranked.

As far as the NJCAA poll goes, the Texas teams are still ranked No. 1 and No. 2. Top-ranked Blinn defeated Northeastern Oklahoma A&M last week in a high-scoring contest, 55-42, while Navarro beat Cisci, 31-8.

This week, Blinn plays host to Cisco, which has a 1-6 record. Navarro travels to Little Rock to play 2-6 Arkansas Baptist tonight.

Fort Scott remains at No. 3 following its 59-17 demolition of Highland Saturday. Jayhawk Conference rival Butler stays at No. 4 after shutting out Independence, 38-0.

The Greyhounds are in Colorado Springs, Colo., as you read this, preparing for a Friday afternoon game against Air Force Prep (5-3). Butler will travel to winless Highland (0-7) Saturday.

Movement begins in the poll at No. 5 as Mississippi Gulf Coast (7-1) moves up one spot after Arizona Western was upset by New Mexico Military last week, 40-33. MGCCC beat Hinds, 41-6, and will face No. 14 Jones County (6-2) Saturday. Jones County moved up two spots after beating Mississippi Delta, 25-14.

Snow (Utah) moves up one to No. 6 as it comes off a victory over former No. 12 Eastern Arizona (5-2). The Badgers (7-1) host Phoenix this weekend.

Grand Rapids (Mich.) was idle last week but moved up one spot anyway to No. 7. One of six remaining undefeated teams, Grand Rapids hosts Harper (Ill.) Saturday.

Dean (Mass.) also moved up one spot after beating Erie, 42-19. The next opponent for unbeaten Dean is No. 18 Nassau (N.Y.), which enters the poll this week after beating Globe Tech (N.Y.), 37-19.

East Mississippi (7-1) is also up one spot after it beat Itawamba, 28-6. Mississippi Delta will be their opponent tonight.

Arizona Western (5-1) now occupies the No. 10 position. They will host Pima this week.

The second 10 begins with the last undefeated team, Rochester Tech (Minn.), which is the only 8-win team in the NJCAA. They are followed by Ellsworth (Iowa), Central Lakes (Minn.), Jones County and Eastern Arizona.

Positions 16-19 are are filled by teams new to the poll. New Mexico Military is in the poll for the first time since the first week of the 2000 season. It is followed by Tyler (Texas), Nassau, Georgia Military and Jayhawk Conference member Coffeyville. The Red Ravens were idle last week but fell one spot anyway. Coffeyville (4-3) travels to Dodge City this weekend.

Another Jayhawk Conference member, Hutchinson, dropped out of the poll this week despite winning. The Blue Dragons (4-3), ranked No. 20 last week, whipped Air Force Prep, 51-10. They play at Independence this weekend.

Three other teams received votes: Pearl River (Miss.), Northwest Mississippi and Lackawanna (Pa.) Lackawanna (4-2) was the only one of those teams which lost last week.
