Top four spots remain unchanged NJCAA poll

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

The top four teams in the NJCAA/jcfootball.com poll remain the same as all of them recorded victories last week.

The only bit of change in the top four is that No. 1 Blinn (Texas) was the unanimous pick this week. Last week, Blinn received five first-place votes and No. 3 Fort Scott Community College received two.

Blinn has been No. 1 for five consecutive weeks. The Buccaneers defeated unranked Tyler, 60-31, last Saturday.

Navarro (Texas) remains at No. 2 after beating Trinity Valley, 42-32. As a result of the loss, Trinity Valley fell three places to No. 18 in this week's poll.

Trinity Valley has to face Blinn this Saturday while Navarro faces Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. If Blinn and Navarro can remain undefeated, they'll face each other at Navarro on Oct. 31 with the No. 1 ranking and the Southwest Junior College Football Conference regular-season championship on the line.

Fort Scott remains at No. 3 after beating Independence, 31-9. Fellow Jayhawk Conference member Butler stays at No. 4 after beating Hutchinson, 13-10, on a field goal with under 30 seconds to play. Hutchinson, which fell nine spots after losing at Fort Scott on Sept. 26, held its position at No. 13 this week. Hutch is the highest-ranked team with two losses while Butler is the highest-ranked one-loss team.

This week, Fort Scott is host to Dodge City, Hutchinson is at home against Coffeyville and Butler has a bye.

The first movement in the poll is at No. 5 where Arizona Western takes over from Eastern Arizona. Arizona Western moved up two spots after beating Eastern, 27-2. Eastern Arizona fell to No. 12. Western is idle this week while Eastern will play at Mesa.

Mississippi Gulf Coast stayed at No. 6 after beating Copiah-Lincoln, 38-14. MGCCC had moved up the poll the previous two weeks by knocking off teams that had been ranked No. 3 going into the contest. MGCCC will play at East Central Mississippi Thursday.

Snow College (Utah) has been creeping its way back up the poll and is now at No. 7. The Badgers routed Mesa 44-0 last week and will play at Mesa Sunday.

There is a tie at No. 8 between undefeated Grand Rapids (Mich.) and Dean (Mass.). Grand Rapids moved up three places after beating Iowa Central, 49-44. The loss bounced then-No. 19 ICC out of the poll. Grand Rapids plays at Joliet Saturday.

Unbeaten Dean, which entered last week at No. 8, maintained its share by beating the Holy Cross junior varsity 27-7. They will play the Yale JV Sunday.

East Mississippi is No. 10. They beat Coahoma, 49-20, last week and will face Northeast Mississippi Saturday.

Rochester Tech (Minn.), which plays in a conference that doesn't offer athletic scholarships. is the lowest-ranked unbeaten team at No. 11. They defeated Mesabi Range 9-0 last week and will host Minnesota Tech Saturday.
