Tiger golfers struggle at Girard
GIRARD -- Fort Scott High School's golf team struggled in its first 18-hole tournament of the season, finishing seventh out of nine full teams and unable to crack the top 20 individually.
"We didn't play nearly as well (Wednesday) as we did at Chanute on Monday," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said. "So goes the game of golf...lots of ups and downs. Hopefully, the girls will rebound (at Joplin) and fair better at Shifferdecker."
The report on Thursday's tournament, hosted by Galena, will be included in Saturday's edition of the Weekend Herald-Tribune.
Fort Scott shot 511 as a team. Nevada was the tournament champion with a score of 397. They had three golfers finish in the top 10, including champ Mariah Jones, who shot 42 on the front nine and 44 on the back to finish at 86.
Kacie Brown had Fort Scott's best finish, tying for 23rd at 60-57--117. Devan Lloyd finished 26th with her 60-58--118. The 58 was her career-best 9-hole score, according to Curran.
Riley Wunderly finished at 67-62--129 for the Tigers. Karley Stark shot 72-75--147 and Haley Kruse shot 77-70--147. Ashleigh Marquardt played her first varsity tournament and show 75-77--152. Stark and Marquardt also had 9-hole rounds that established new career lows for each.
