Tiger JV tennis sees doubles team take 1st
Fort Scott High School hosted a junior varsity tennis tournament Monday. No team scores were kept but the Tigers had a bracket winner in No.1 doubles and a pair of thirds. There were four teams entered.
Sammi Carr and Corina Harrison were the winners of the No. 1 doubles bracket. They won three close matches. First, they beat Stephanie Hinman/Tiffany Sexton of Labette County, 6-4. Next, they defeated Racheal Gillman/Halie Smith of Coffeyville, 6-5 (11-9). Last was a 6-5 (7-3) win over Elizabeth Fehr/Erin Christiansen of Chanute.
"Sammi and Corina had a great tournament," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "They made some mistakes, but they showed a lot of determination and focus in winning two matches in tiebreakers. It was good to see two young players not let a pressure situation get to them"
Krista Hightower and Aubin Duff were third in No. 2 doubles as they tied with two other entries at 2-1 then dropped on the tie-breaker, which was most total games won.
They lost to the bracket champs, Kayla Kabrey/Kayla Beasely of Labette County, 6-2, and beat the second-place team, Sam Froelich/Scarlet Manley of Coffeyville, 6-4. They also shut out Tiffany Dillon/Casey Gamble of Chanute.
"Krista and Aubin had a good tournament," Barr said. "They are gaining experience and have potential. They still need to work on improving fundamentals, but they play well together and keep improving."
Bailee Hall finished third in No. 1 singles. She lost to Amanda Clapp of LCHS, 6-1, defeated Callie McAskill of Coffeyville, 6-3, and lost to Ashley Parrett of Chanute, 6-1. Kelsie How played No. 2 singles, but was 0-3. The scores were 6-0 versus Labette's Samantha Mansfield, 6-2 against Coffeyville's Tayita Abudu and 6-0 with Chanute's Sarah Dickerson.
The Tiger JV is scheduled to play at Parsons Monday afternoon.
