Gray: There was no bomb

Thursday, September 3, 2009

According to Bourbon County Sheriff Ron Gray, a call was received from a state agency at about 5 p.m. Tuesday that a possible bomb threat occurred in Fulton.

After arriving at the scene, deputies found what was believed to be pipe bomb on the inside of the front door of a recently vacated home located at 205 E. Spruce in Fulton. Gray said agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office, and the Olathe Bomb Squad were also on the scene.

Gray said technicians were able to bring the device out of the house and deploy a blast round to the device. The blast round was used to disrupt anything that might have been housed within the device as well as to open the item for further inspection, Gray said.

"Once that was done, the item was found to be non-explosive in nature," Gray said.

After an assessment, the items remaining from the device were collected and sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation's lab for further inspection to obtain evidence which may lead to the resolution of the incident.

"I think we'll reach some closure with it," Gray said.

According to Gray, because there was no actual bomb, none of the agencies will file charges. However, Bourbon County may file charges for the act of placing the device.

The incident is alleged to have derived from an ongoing dispute between two families in the area.
