The children of two Mercy Health Center employees are among 20 students who were recently named recipients of the Charles E. Thoele Scholarship Program offered by the Sisters of Mercy Health System.

Recipients will receive $1,000 each to be used toward educational expenses at undergraduate and vocational-technical schools during the upcoming school year.

Adrienne Bahr, daughter of Jerald Bahr, a medical technologist at Mercy Health Center, is one of the scholarship recipients. Adrienne plans to attend Fort Scott Community College and major in nursing.

The second recipient is Amanda McDaniel, daughter of Melanie McDaniel, a reimbursement analyst at Mercy Health Center. Amands plans to attend Pittsburg State University and also major in nursing.

The Charles E. Thoele Scholarship Program was established by Mercy in 1993 to honor Thoele, a retired Mercy executive and board member.

The program awards 18 $1,000 scholarships annually to dependents of Mercy employees. Two additional scholarships are awarded each year to students from Sisters of Mercy-sponsored high schools.

This year's Thoele Scholarship recipients were selected from a pool of 194 applicants. Recipients are chosen based on academic achievement and personal character, as demonstrated by participating in school and community activities, work experience, leadership qualities, awards and honors, goal setting, and personal and school references.
