Giants draft Adam Champion

The Nevada Griffons have once again seen one of their players taken by the MLB draft.

Left-handed pitcher Adam Champion posted a 1-0 record for the Griffons this season in two appearances. Champion pitched just 6 1-3 innings for the Griffons, but was able to record seven strikeouts and an opposing batting average of just .136 on his way to becoming one of the most valuable members of the Griffons' starting rotation.

Out of his two appearances, Champion started one game against the Mac-N-Seitz Athletics on June 5, in which he pitched five shutout innings and recorded five of his seven total strikeouts as a Griffon. All three of the hits he surrendered this year came in that start.

Champion has now joined the likes of Les Walrond, Mark Teahen and most recently, Korby Mintken as former Griffons players to join Major League Baseball clubs. Champion was selected by the San Francisco Giants near the beginning of the 23rd round of this year's draft as the 687th overall pick.

With that selection, Champion now becomes the second Griffons player in as many years to join a Major League club, though Mintken went undrafted in 2008 and was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies to play for Single-A Lakewood during the 2009 season.

Mintken played in 22 games for the Griffons during the 2008 season and was at or near the top of the stat sheets in nearly every offensive category.
