Fort Scott students 'hop' to raise funds

A group of students from Fort Scott recently spent an evening serving dinner to local residents.
On May 29, three students from Fort Scott High School and 10 students from Fort Scott Christian Heights conducted a car hop at Heritage Park. In addition, the students conducted a car wash.
The students, all State History Day champions, are trying to raise enough money to compete in the National History Day competition beginning on June 13 in College Park, Maryland.
According to Megan Felt, the Lowell Milken Center and sponsor for the FSHS National History Day students, the students had a good turnout at the car hop and the car wash. More than 200 people purchased tickets for the car hop dinner prior to the event, and according to Felt, 70 people who had not previously purchased tickets, bought dinners at the car hop.
The students worked together to wash about 15 cars during the evening, which was conducted in conjunction to the Friday Night Concert Series at Heritage Park.
At the National History Day event, Reanda Mims, Grant Stucky and Keenan Gregory, Fort Scott High School, will be performing a drama titled "Recipe for Legacy: 35 mm and a Wide Angle Lens." Fort Scott Christian Heights students Theresa Schafer, Marcus Page, David Cox and Elizabeth Wallace will perform a skit called "Cyclone in Calico: A Nation in Her Wake," and Austen Hansen, Jake Hansen and Nathan Davolt, FSCH, will compete at the competition with their senior division Web site called "Henryk Slawik: The Man that Saved Thousands." In addition, Kaitlyn Arnold, Alex Arnold and Beth Hill, FSCH, will participate in the competition with their group exhibit board titled "Barney Ford: The Black Baron of Colorado."
Area residents who would like to make a donation to help the students make their trip to the nation's capital can contact trip sponsor Maria Bahr at (620) 224-0873.
