The Resource Center for Independent Living, Inc., recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special luncheon in Fort Scott.

RCIL, an organization that provides programs and services for people with disabilities, hosted the luncheon not only to celebrate its anniversary, but also to help educate area residents about the important services it offers.

According to RCIL Executive Director Chad Wilkins, the organization will be conducting 10 lunch and learn activities across the state to help raise awareness about the services RCIL can offer to residents with disabilities. RCIL's program involves individuals sharing resources, that teach people with disabilities where and how to obtain needed information and help.

"If your in a situation, give us a call and hopefully we can get you the information you need," Wilkins said. "We teach people their rights and the skills to live on their own. We work together to remove barriers and change laws. Anyone, no matter the age or disability, can have services."

Also at the luncheon, area resident Marjorie Hester testified to the effectiveness of the programs offered by RCIL. Hester, who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), said without the help of RCIL, she would not have a success story to tell.

"RCIL has helped me tremendously," she said. "I don't know what I'd have done without them. If it wasn't for RCIL, I probably would have died. I couldn't afford to go to the doctor or buy my medications. I hope nothing happens to RCIL. They help a lot of hard working people that can't help themselves. Where would these people be if it wasn't for RCIL?"

Sen. Bob Marshall, R-Fort Scott, and Fort Scott City Commissioner Sam Mason both in attendance at the event took a few minutes to speak with attendees.
