Disc golf new for Good Ol' Days

Friday, May 29, 2009

The 2009 Good Ol' Days Festival will host a disc golf tournament for the first time.

The tournament will be held at 1 p.m., June 6, at Gunn Park with on site registration beginning at noon. There will be a registration fee of $5 per entry.

Participants will play 18 holes of disc golf in competition to win a portion of the cash purse. According to the event organizer Tom Robertson, the participants will be broken into two pools based on their scores. The advanced, or top, pool winner will receive a portion of the pot and the novice, or bottom, pool winner will receive also receive a portion.

Although this is the first time the tournament has been held during Good Ol' Days, it is not the first time one has been held in Fort Scott. Robertson said the Buck Run Community Center has sponsored a disc golf tournament as part of Freedom Fest in the past.

"I know the popularity of disc golf has really picked up in the last few years," Robertson said. "Most of the time on a nice day, you go out there and there is somebody playing disc golf."

Robertson is not sure what to expect for a turn out because of the wide range of events being held along with the festival, however he is confident the tournament will be a success.

"I think we will have enough to make it an annual event," Robertson said.

Robertson added he hopes to get feedback from the participants on how to make the event better.
