Eagles qualify every athlete; Jays advance in 10 events
PLEASANTON -- Uniontown brought only seven athletes to the Pleasanton Class 2A Regional Track Meet here Friday. But every one of them are going on to this weekend's State meet in Wichita in at least one event.
Meanwhile, Pleasanton advanced in 10 events -- seven boys' and three girls'-- with the boys finishing in fourth place.
The top three teams in the boys' meet finished within six points as Yates Center won with 67 points and Pittsburg Colgan and Lyndon tied for second with 61. Pleasanton had 50 points and Uniontown finished seventh with 37.
Shawnee Maranatha Academy won the girls' title with 88 points followed by Alma-Wabaunsee with 79, Colgan 76 and Uniontown in fourth place with 62. Pleasanton tied with Northeast-Arma for ninth with 20 points.
Uniontown's Abbie Smith advance to State in three events, winning two and tying a school record. She finished the 100-meter hurdles in 16 second flat, tying the mark set in 1974 by Reatha Bruner. Smith also won the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 10 inches and finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in 53.87.
Uniontown's other Regional champion is David Shank, who won discus with a throw of 137' 11". That put him about five feet ahead of the runner-up. Shank was also fifth in shot put at 44' 2 1/4".
Pleasanton had a 1-2 finish in boys' pole vault as champion David Sowards' cleared 10' 6" and Mason Coffman went over eight feet. Sowards was the Blu-Jays' only champ.
The remaining Uniontown qualifiers to State are:
* Emily Aikins, who finished second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She ran the 100 in 13.26 and the 200 in 27.83. She also took fifth in long jump at 15' 2, missing qualifying in that event by one inch.
* Kait Spainhoward was third in both the shot put and the discus. Her mark in the shot was 36' 6 3/4" while she went 106' 9" in discus.
* Jacy Ermel was fourth in javelin with a distance of 86' 8".
* Colt Bartlett was second in shot put at 46' 0 1/4". Louis Novak of Leavenworth Immaculata won with a heave of 53' 1 1/2", which was the best mark recorded in all of the Class 2A Regionals.
* Barlett also took third in discus as he came in with a throw of 126' 3".
* Ben Dixon qualified in two events. He finished third in long jump at 19' 7 1/4" and fourth in the 200 meters in 23.99. He was also sixth in the 100 meters in 11.75.
For Pleasanton's boys:
* The 4x100-meter relay team with Dakota Kern, Sowards, Kolbee McKee and Daniel Barner finished in second with a time of 45.37. Pittsburg Colgan was the winner in 44.44.
* Cody Maloney was third in high jump while Joey Shoopman was fourth. Both cleared 5' 10" with tie-breakers used to determine their placing.
* T.J. Davis was fourth in shot put at 44' 9 1/2".
* Skyler Martin recorded a 121' 3" in discus as he qualified in fourth place.
For Pleasanton's girls:
* Codi Byington finished third in high jump after clearing 4' 6".
* Darla Snyder was fourth in shot put at 33' 4".
* Kim Robinson qualified with a fourth-place mark of 104' 6" in discus.
Pleasanton also had seven other medals for fifth and sixth.
* McKee ran a 16.9 in the 110-meter hurdles and Maloney ran the 200 in 24.07 as each finished fifth.
* Cheyenne Reynolds threw the javelin 86' 5", Snyder went 95' 7" in discus and Robinson had a 33' 1 3/4" in shot as each finished fifth.
* Jon Ransier ran the 200 in 24.29 and Martin threw the javelin 135' 11" as each finished in sixth place.
The State meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University. Events for Class 2A schools begin at 7:45 a.m. Friday. Events for all classes start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday
