ONLINE FIRST: Nevada, Mo. teen charged with murder

Nevada, Mo. -- A Vernon County warrant was issued Monday for 17-year-old Garrett Matthew Mason, Nevada, in connection with the stabbing deaths of two teenagers.

Mason was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action for the deaths of 14-year-old Kylie Leyva, and 18-year-old Anne Reed, both of Nevada.

According to a statement from Nevada Police Chief Gary Herstein, both teens were stabbed about 6:30 p.m. Sunday at a Nevada home located in the 600 block of North Cedar. Both were taken by helicopoter to hospitals in Joplin where they were pronounced dead.

Mason was arrested by Nevada police shortly afterward and is still being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $2 million bond. The Nevada PD is still investigating the case.

According to The Joplin Globe, autopsies were scheduled to be performed Tuesday in Springfield, Mo.
