Eagles fall in title game
HUMBOLDT -- Uniontown's softball team reached the final of the Humboldt Class 2-1A Regional Tournament here Tuesday night but fell to the host Cubs, 10-0.
To reach the final, Uniontown (11-7) defeated Altoona-Midway in a semifinal held earlier in the day, 17-7.
A six-run fourth inning helped the Eagles take control in the semifinal against the Jets (7-5). That gave Uniontown a 10-2 lead at that point.
"Against Altoona, we hit the ball well, ran the bases aggressively and scored a lot of runs," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "All in all, we played pretty well."
Tayler Shook (6-3) allowed six hits and six walks but also struck out nine Jets. She also had three hits, one of which was a triple.
Jessie Camac, Heather Schnichels and Tiffany Poyner each had three hits. Candice Clayton, Rayma Ridge and Audrey Dixon had two each. Ridge hit a home run while Clayton belted a triple.
Humboldt (20-1), a power in the Tri Valley League, reached the final by beating Marmaton Valley 12-2 in the first semifinal. Then in the first inning of the championship game, the Cubs opened up with a seven-run first inning.
Lenzie Boring, who held the Eagles to three hits over the course of an entire doubleheader when the teams met on May 7, threw a no-hitter this time around. She walked two and struck out 10.
"She was overpowering," Shinn said. "She is the best pitcher we have faced all season.
"Our defense played well. That didn't beat us in the second game. Humboldt's offense and our lack of it did."
The Eagles also were named the Three Rivers League champions after going 7-1 in league play. Altoona-Midway was 5-1 but winning percentage was used to determine the champion.
"We lose only one senior (Schnichels) from this year's team," Shinn said. "So we hope to be an even better team next season.
"We had a good season this year and want to continue to improve even more so we can be more competitive against teams like Humboldt"
