FSHS Choirs to perform at fine arts center

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Area residents will have the opportunity to hear the musical talents of the Fort Scott High School choirs on Wednesday.

Beginning at 8 p.m., at the new Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center, 2108 S. Horton, 160 students from the FSHS Concert Choir, Beginning Choir, Select Ensemble, Senior Women's Ensemble and the Junior Men's Quintet will be performing for event attendees. The concert will include selections from "Les Miserables," which will feature senior soloists. In addition, the choirs will be singing jazz selections such as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B," "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got that Swing" and classic pop selections from the 1950s through the 1980s. Beginning with their sophomore year in high school, students must audition in order to be in the choir, according to FSHS choir teacher Pat Harry. The Select Ensemble tryouts are strenuous, Harry said, because there are only 28 spots on the ensemble, which is open to students in 10th through 12th grades. Both the Senior Women's Ensemble and the Junior Men's Quintet meet outside of the school day to practice.
