UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Uniontown High School's softball team played three varsity games and one JV contest during the week. Monday, the varsity won a Three Rivers League make-up game with Oswego, 5-1, and also took a junior varsity game, 7-6.

Thursday, the Eagles were swept in a non-league doubleheader by Humboldt, 13-0 and 14-0. The Cubs have one of the best small-school softball teams in the southeastern part of the state of Kansas.

Monday's varsity game was originally scheduled as the second part of a league doubleheader April 9. The Eagles (6-0 TRL, 6-5 overall) won the first game 12-1 on its originally-scheduled date.

The second game resumed from the top of the third inning and was scoreless until the Eagles pushed a run across in the bottom of the fifth. Oswego tied it in the top of the sixth but Uniontown scored four times in the bottom of the inning.

Ithaca Marlier (2-2) was the winning pitcher, allowing five hits and no walks. She struck out one batter.

"Ithaca was not overpowering but she was able to consistently force the Oswego hitters to put the ball in play and we made several defensive stops," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said.

Tiffany Poyner led the Uniontown offense with two hits. Jessie Camac stole two bases.

The junior varsity game was added on to the day's play so that the trip would be better for Oswego. It came down to the bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied at 6-6. Megan Schnichels placed a bunt down the first-base line on which Oswego could not make a play, allowing the winning run to score from third.

Julia Ayers had three hits for the Eagles. Jessica Harrison had two.

Thursday, Humboldt pitcher Lenzie Boring held Uniontown to three hits the entire day. Candice Clayton had the only Eagle hit in the opener. Tayler Shook and Cassie Schwalm had the hits in the second game.

"Boring overpowered us and, for the most part, we were not able to get runners on base," Shinn said.

Boring allowed one walk and struck out 20 batters in 10 innings of work, as both games were decided by run rule. Humboldt (16-0) is undefeated this season.

"Humboldt is a good team and the kind of team we hope to become in the future," Shinn said. "I think that we are a better team than we showed today."

The next outing for the Eagles is at Chetopa Monday.
