Tiger baseball shut out in Nevada

Monday, March 30, 2009

NEVADA -- The Fort Scott High School baseball team was shut out and run-ruled, 10-0, Monday afternoon in its season opener against Nevada at Lyons Stadium here.

Nevada, which was also opening its season after seeing its opener postopned twice, got a strong performance on the mound as well from starter Colby Shepherd and reliever Austin Baldwin as they combined for a two-hit shutout.

Nevada scored in every inning. The first run of the game scored when Fort Scott starter Mikey Karleskint, who had been struggling since the opening pitch, let one sail over the head of catcher Josh Durossette, allowing Shepherd to score from third.

That turned out to be the end of the offensive effort in the opening frame for Nevada as Scotten lined out to the shortstop, bringing the inning to a close with one run on no hits and two runners left on base.

Shepherd went on to almost completely shut down the Fort Scott offense as he allowed just one hit in his three innings of work.

Nevada was once again able to find an offensive spark in the bottom of the second. Ross Wolfe got the offense going for Nevada in the inning when he was able to take advantage of an error that brought in a run.

Baldwin quickly followed by sending a 1-2 pitch into the gap in left center that drove in two more, allowing Nevada to extend its lead to 4-0. By the time the inning came to a close, the Tigers were able to plate one more, heading into the third inning with a 5-0 lead.

Nevada took advantage of two more hits in its half of the inning to add one more insurance run to the lead, taking a 6-0 advantage into the fourth.

Nevada up four runs in the final two innings on just two hits to take the victory by a final score of 10-0.

Strong defense was also a major contributor to the Nevada's victory as there were less than ideal field conditions as a result of this past weekend's wet weather.

Fort Scott will try to get on the winning track Friday as the Tigers host a doubleheader against Girard. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
