Crawford County seeks stolen cattle

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office is investigating two separate incidents of stolen cattle, according to a press release from the CCSO.

The first report involved two 1,600-pound cows which were taken form a pasture containing several cattle north of Farlington. One of the stolen cows is pregnant and black in color. In the right ear of both cows, there should be a yellow ear tag with a three digit number on it. Both cows, which are of mixed breed, were last seen on Tuesday, March 3 and were reported stolen on Wednesday, March 11. Both cattle have a unique brand, which belongs to their owner.

In a second stolen-cattle report, eight 1,200-pound cows and four calves ranging from newborn on up were reportedly missing. The cows were of mixed breed and mixed colors and had unique brands belonging to their owner. In addition, although the color is unknown, the cattle should have ear tags. Also, the calves were not weaned.

The CCSO is asking area residents to be aware of unknown suspects in the area and at sale barns or auctions. Also, people should be conscious of anyone who recently came into possession of several head of cattle or trucks or trailers loading cattle in rural areas late at night .

Any suspicious activity, vehicles or subjects should be reported to the CCSO at (620) 724-8274. The CCSO is working with the Kansas Animal Health Department and have forwarded this information on to all the area and regional livestock sale barns in an attempt to locate and recover the animals.
