PLEASANTON -- Abbie Smith and Brooke Harper both had career-best scoring totals as Uniontown's girls defeated Pleasanton, 59-36, in the first round of the Northeast-Arma Class 2A Sub-State Tournament.

The play of Smith and Harper was key as Jacy Ermel suffered an injury during Monday's practice and could not play.

"The girls really came out and played well," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "We knew without Jacy in the lineup, someone would have to pick up their game.

"Brooke hit a couple of big three's in the second quarter to kind of open things up for us."

Uniontown, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, led 18-8 after one period of play. The Eagles (9-12) also outscored Pleasanton 17-3 in the third period to extend the margin to 45-23.

Smith led the Eagles with 24 points as she made 10 of 12 free throws. She also had eight rebounds and six steals to lead Uniontown in both those areas.

Harper added 11 points, hitting three 3-point goals. Taylor Rathbun hit a pair of three's as she finished with eight.

Pleasanton (9-12) was led by Rachel Richmond's 11 points. Erika Easley had eight points.

The Eagles will head to Arma Friday night to take on top-seeded Pittsburg Colgan. The Panthers (18-2) drubbed winless Marmaton Valley, 81-20, in anther one of Tuesday's first-round games.
