'Hawks move on in Sub-State

MOUND CITY -- Jayhawk-Linn shut out Herington in the third quarter of play but then had to hold off a fourth-quarter rally in order to prevail, 37-36, in an Osage City Class 3A Sub-State first-round game here Monday night.

The third-seeded Jayhawks (16-5) will move on to a 6 p.m. semifinal game Thursday night against Allen-Northern Heights. The No. 2-seed Wildcats (16-5) advanced with a 45-29 win over Pomona-West Franklin.

Cassie Rockers led the Jayhawks with 14 points followed by Taylor Dawson with 13.

The 'Hawks led 12-8 after one period of play but Herington (11-10) led 23-21 at halftime. Jayhawk-Linn outscored the Railers 8-0 in the third.

Only four players scored for Herington.

The other semifinal Thursday night will feature top-seeded Central Heights (17-4) against No. 5 Burlington. Central Heights -- which has beaten Jayhawk-Linn twice this season -- advanced with a 55-36 win over Council Grove. Burlington advanced with a 39-33 victory on the road over Osage City.
