Fort Scott boys, Iola girls win frosh tourney titles
Fort Scott High School's freshmen boys' team wrapped up the freshmen tournament championship Friday night by beating Chanute 47-34 in the last game of the tournament.
The freshmen boys finished the season with a record of 13-6.
Cameron Woodring scored 16 points and Matt Wright added 15 for the Tigers.
Iola finished in second place in the round-robin tournament after beating Marmaton Valley, 63-41. Chanute was third and Marmaton Valley fourth.
On Thursday night, the Tigers beat Coffeyville, 71-59. According to head coach Pechone Stepps, Fort Scott led by just four points going into the fourth quarter.
Luke Brown scored 17 points for the Tigers in that game. Matt Wright added 14 and Kyle Altic finished with 11.
Fort Scott's girls were 1-2 in the freshmen tournament and finished tied for third place. Iola won the championship on a tie-breaker with Chanute after both teams finished with 2-1 records.
Iola's win over Chanute on Monday broke the tie for first place. Friday night, Fort Scott's girls beat Iola, 31-26.
Monday night in the tournament opener, Jayhawk-Linn took a 30-21 win over the Tigers. Tuesday, Fort Scott lost to Chanute, 34-20, and Jayhawk-Linn lost to Iola, 32-22.
