'Hound women bounce Allen; men fall to Devils
IOLA -- Fort Scott Community College's women took a 69-45 victory over Allen County here Saturday night as the Greyhounds attempt to get the best seed possible for the upcoming Region VI Tournament.
Fort Scott's men held an 11-point lead at the half but saw Allen County rally to take a 62-54 win in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.
Fort Scott women 69, Allen County 45.
The win allowed the Greyhound women to complete another season sweep, which will come in handy if any tie-breakers are needed. Fort Scott will hold tie-breakers over the bottom three teams in Division I if it can beat Kansas City Kansas Wednesday night at Arnold Arena.
The 'Hounds (6-7 vs. Division I teams, 8-8 East, 15-13 overall going into Monday's games at Highland) held a 43-20 lead at halftime.
Leondra Doomes-Stephens led all scorers with 22 points. Monet Fernandes followed for the 'Hounds with 14 points, Valencia Kelly added 11 and Kylie Shepard scored 10.
Sumayyah Muhammad led Allen County (1-12, 2-15, 5-24) with 13 points and Angela Houge added 11.
Allen County men 62, Fort Scott 54.
Allen County (7-6, 8-9, 13-16) outscored the Greyhounds 40-21 in the second half. For the game, the Red Devils shot 52 percent from the field, making 23 of 44 field-goal attempts, which helped them overcome 24 turnovers.
Fort Scott (3-10, 4-12, 10-18) shot just 36 percent from the floor on 23 of 64.
Darrell Blanton scored 15 points for the 'Hounds while Eric Kellogg had 14 points on seven-of-11 field-goal shooting.
Manny Richardson and Andra Bailey each had double-doubles for Allen County. Richardson and Bailey each had 16 points as they combined to make 14 of 19 field-goal attempts. Bailey had 16 rebounds while Richardson had 10.
The Greyhounds were scheduled to play at Highland Monday night. Although this was a conference doubleheader, it will not help either team toward post-season seeding as Highland is a Division II school.
The 'Hounds play host to Kansas City Kansas in their regular season finale Wednesday night at Arnold Arena. The women's game is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the men's game beginning at approximately 7 p.m.
