FSCC men beat Highland; women stopped in 2OT
HIGHLAND -- Fort Scott Community College's men unleashed a scoring fury in the second half of a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division contest here Monday night, taking an 81-68 victory.
Meanwhile, Fort Scott's women, despite shooting the ball nearly 100 times from the field, lost to Highland in double overtime, 85-82.
Neither game counted toward Region VI Tournament post-season seeding since Fort Scott is a Division I school and Highland plays in Division II.
Fort Scott men 81, Highland 68.
The Greyhounds (5-12 East, 11-18 overall) shot 65 percent from the field in the second half as they broke a 31-31 halftime tie.
Both teams shot about 41 percent in the first half but Highland (5-13, 13-17) remained in that range in the second half. Fort Scott also converted 23 of 33 free-throw attempts.
Darrell Blanton made 10 of 15 shots from the field as he led the Greyhounds with 23 points. Kurklin Bohannon added 21 points by going six of eight from the field. Bryce Kemp chipped in with 15 points.
Fort Scott also outrebounded Highland, 41-33. Brandon Dougherty was credited with seven rebounds for the 'Hounds.
Highland women 85, Fort Scott 82, 2 OT.
Valencia Kelly's 30-point outing -- the second of her career -- wasn't enough to carry the Greyhounds past the host Scotties, who dressed only seven players.
The 'Hounds (8-9, 15-14) shot the ball 98 times from the field but made only 33 of them (34 percent). Highland (2-16, 9-21) shot 48 percent from the field on 28 of 58 and also went 24 of 40 at the free-throw line.
Leondra Doomes-Stephens scored 13 points for Fort Scott before fouling out and Monet Fernandes added 11. Tanna Prenger led a quartet of Scottie double-digit scorers with 26 points.
