Ravens avenge earlier loss to 'Hounds
COFFEYVILLE -- When Fort Scott Community College's men upset Coffeyville in the first game of conference play on Jan. 3, it was in large part because the Greyhounds dominated the Red Ravens in the rebounding department.
Coffeyville was determined not to let that happen again and held the Greyhounds to just nine boards in the first half and 25 in the game on its way to a 91-63 blowout in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play Saturday night
That wasn't a misprint. The Red Ravens -- who have not lost since the first meeting with the 'Hounds -- held a 22-9 advantage on the boards in the first half.
Rebounds carry over to shooting percentage. If a team isn't getting offensive rebounds, it will have a low percentage because it goes 0 for 1 on a trip downcourt instead of getting a chance to go 1 for 2 by getting a rebound. And when the other team gets a lot of rebounds -- offensive or defensive -- it gets extra chances to score.
Thus, at halftime, Fort Scott was eight of 23 from the field (35 percent) while Coffeyville was 21 of 36 (58 percent). The Ravens led 50-26 at the break.
Everyone who played for Coffeyville (9-1 East, 17-5 overall) scored at least three points in the game.
The Ravens broke the game open with a 20-6 run that made it 27-12 with 9:43 left. During that stretch, the Greyhounds (3-7, 9-13) had only one field goal.
Although Fort Scott found it easier to score in the second half, Coffeyvlle kept up its torrid first-half pace and extended the lead to as much as 30 points a few times late in the contest.
Lenny Daniel made nine of 11 shots from the field as he led the Ravens with 19 points. Antoine Branch followed with 11 and Richard Townsend-Gant added 11.
Kurklin Bohanon led the Greyhounds with 13 points even though he struggled from the field. He went just one of six in the first half as he had just two points. The Ravens made sure he didn't burn them from three-point range as he had no threes and took just two shots from behind the arc all night.
Bryce Kemp and Darrell Blanton each added 11 points for the 'Hounds.
The Ravens finished the night 39 of 68 from the field for 57 percent while Fort Scott went 22 of 57 for 39 percent. Coffeyville also finished the game with 42 rebounds as Daniel hauled down 10.
The Greyhounds will play host to Cowley at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Arnold Arena.
