Hampton scores 21 off bench
Shadara Hampton might be becoming that third scorer Fort Scott Community College women's coach Stasha Richards has been looking for.
Hampton scored a career-best 21 points in helping the Greyhounds to a 90-69 rout of Allen County in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play at Arnold Arena Wednesday night.
Hampton has scored in double figures in two of her last three games. And it might not be coincidence that Fort Scott has scored 90 points in each of the games she's cracked the double-figure barrier. She made five of seven shots from the field and 10 of 11 free throws in Wednesday's game.
Hampton took over the game for a stretch in the first half as her nine consecutive points gave Fort Scott the lead. Two free throws with 12:31 to go gave the 'Hounds (4-3 East, 11-8 overall) their first lead, 13-12. Then Denise Duplechin found Hampton for a layup. Valencia Kelly stole in the inbound pass and found Hampton for another score. Then Duplechin fed Hampton for a layup, which also drew a foul. The ensuing free throw made it 20-12 with 11:04 to go.
From that point, the Greyhounds started pulling away. Leondra Doomes-Stephens, the conference's leading scorer, gave Fort Scott its largest lead of the half with a layup to make it it 36-20 with 5:36 remaining.
Allen County (0-7, 3-16) managed to regain some control and was able to chip the lead down to 42-32 with about a minute and a half to go. But Doomes-Stephens and Kylie Shepard hit back-to-back three-point shots to make it a 16-point margin at the half.
Doomes-Stephens, who came into the night averaging 22.8 points per game -- she's the only player in the Jayhawk Conference averaging more than 17 -- struggled somewhat in this one and finished with 19 as she made only five of 17 shots from the field. Kelly, fifth in the conference in scoring at 16.2 points per game, added 15 points.
Sumayyah Muhammad scored 22 points for Allen County as she made 10 of 18 shots from the field. Amber Girdy added 13 points.
Fort Scott shot 47 percent from the field, making 29 of 62 field-goal attempts, outrebounded Allen County 44-29 and dished 20 assists.
The Red Devils shot 42 percent for the game on 25 of 59 but went only 13 for 33 in the second half.
Tashanda Jackson came off the bench to lead the Greyhounds with eight rebounds. Denise Duplechin had five steals.
The 'Hounds will go to Kansas City Kansas Community College Saturday afternoon for another Eastern Division match-up.
